Supporting a Family in Need
Gaskells Waste was proud to support a recent BBC One DIY SOS build in Llanberis, North Wales, providing all waste and recycling bins throughout the project to help deliver a life-changing home transformation for a local family.
The Family’s Challenge
The build focused on Helen and Llyr, who began planning a home extension in December 2021. In February 2023, severe rainfall flooded the exposed foundations of their property, causing extensive damage that was not covered by insurance and forcing the couple to use their life savings just to make the home safe. During this difficult period, Helen discovered she was pregnant with their first child, Macsen.
He was born five weeks early and was later diagnosed with Kabuki Syndrome, a rare condition requiring ongoing care and specialist equipment at home. With limited funds, a single income, and the arrival of a second baby, Ffredi, the family were unable to complete the renovation, leaving parts of the home cold, damp, and unsafe.
Teamwork and Transformation
DIY SOS brought together tradespeople, volunteers, and suppliers from across the country to transform the property into a warm, secure home for Helen and Llyr.
Walking up to the house for the iconic Big Reveal alongside so many other businesses who had given their time and resources was a truly humbling experience. Seeing the scale of teamwork involved, and then witnessing the life-changing impact the build has had for the family, was something our team will never forget.
