Dentists’ clinical waste disposal

Clinical waste can be hazardous to human health, which is why it is so tightly regulated by the Controlled Waste Regulations 2012, to prevent members of the public from coming into contact with waste biological matter and contaminated sharps.

Under the 2012 regulations, clinical waste includes anything produced via healthcare activity that includes:

• Toxins or microorganisms known to cause disease in humans and other living creatures.
• Contamination by a medicine with a biologically active pharmaceutical agent.
• Sharps, bodily fluids and biological material that contains a dangerous substance.

Due to the nature of their work, dentists produce all kinds of controlled clinical waste, from used hypodermic needles and syringes, to discarded medicines, bodily fluids, extracted teeth and other oral tissue which may be infected.

Good clinical waste management is at the heart of providing good healthcare, as it helps to protect employee and patient safety, maintain hygienic premises and reduce the risk of disease spreading.

At Gaskells we take this extremely seriously, and can help to establish a dental waste management plan that collects clinical waste separately and securely from other general waste streams on-site, and provides the required hazardous waste disposal services to remove it in line with the current legislation.

We start with a full audit of your current clinical waste and general waste provisions, so that we can decide exactly what types of bins and containers you need, give you sufficient capacity to store all of your waste between collections, and set up scheduled clinical waste removal so nothing is kept on-site for longer than necessary.

Choose a Container Type

Sizes range from 240 litre to 1100 litre containers with lockable lids available.

These are ideal for all types of business & commercial waste including general waste, cardboard, mixed recycling, food and glass.

Front End Loaders, or FELs, are the familiar kind of commercial lidded skips, suitable for large volumes of compactable waste, and especially for recyclable cardboard waste and other dry mixed recyclables.

Roll On-Roll Off, or Ro-Ro skips, are among the largest containers available for commercial use, suitable for the disposal of very large quantities of general waste and bulky materials like construction waste and scrap.

General waste disposal for dentists

We know that not all of the waste you produce falls under the definition of clinical or hazardous, which is why we can include general waste disposal in our contracts for dentists.

In this case, we can work with you to give you the right number, size and type of waste containers, from wheelie bins to larger dumpster-style front-end loaders, and to allow you to separate out recyclable materials from general waste to meet your environmental obligations as a producer of commercial waste.

Our wheelie bins and FELs are designed to be easy to use and convenient to position wherever you need them, with additional security features like lockable lids to prevent unauthorised access to any of the waste you place inside.

This gives you extra peace of mind that whatever you throw away, it will be kept safe and secure inside your bin until your next collection date.

As a registered waste carrier, Gaskells can provide you with all the paperwork you need to demonstrate compliance with Duty of Care regulations, which require you to maintain reasonable responsibility for your waste materials not only until they are collected from your premises, but right through until they reach their final destination at a recycling centre or other waste processing facility.

Less waste to landfill

Gaskells are environmentally led, which means wherever possible, we will look to make good use of the waste materials we collect, whether they are recyclable paper, plastic, metal and glass, non-recyclable general waste, or a mixture of different types of waste materials.

Our long-term aim is to send nothing to landfill. Recycling processes are now well established and mature for many materials, offering an economical way to reprocess waste into new valuable goods without using any more natural resources.

For general waste where recycling methods do not currently exist, we can still divert this away from landfill sites by sending it to our Energy from Waste facility.

EfW works by combusting the waste under controlled conditions – this releases the energy from the materials so that it can be fed back into the National Grid, but importantly it also captures any harmful emissions and greenhouse gases from the burning so they are not released into the atmosphere.

In this way, disposing of general waste with Gaskells protects the environment, produces energy and avoids adding to the UK’s landfill sites – making it a win-win solution for dentists’ non-recyclable waste disposal.

Getting started with Gaskells

If you express an interest in working with Gaskells as your dental waste disposal contractor, we can arrange a no-obligation free on-site waste audit, where a member of our experienced team will visit you to see first-hand the quantity and type of waste materials you produce on a typical day.

From there, we can recommend suitable waste containers to store all of your rubbish safely, securely and separately from contaminants, and a waste collection schedule that removes it as frequently as required.

We offer collections on a fortnightly, weekly and daily basis – so if you regularly have waste materials that need to be removed as soon as possible for hygiene or infection control reasons, we can work with you to create a schedule that meets those needs.

It all starts with your free waste audit, so if you’re interested in hearing our recommendations with no obligation, call us on 0345 305 2614 or fill in our online enquiry form to let us know what you need.

Need our help to move over?

If you have an existing dental waste contractor, Gaskells can help you to transition over to our services smoothly and without incurring any unnecessary cost.

We can negotiate with your current waste disposal provider to release you from your contract so that you can start to benefit from Gaskells’ expertise as soon as possible.

If you are unable to leave your current contract until it expires, that’s fine too, and we can make sure that we have your new contract all ready to go on the day you are able to switch over.

We also offer a price guarantee, so if we quote you a price for dental waste removal services, we will honour that for the same services at a later date, if you have time left to run on your existing waste services contract with another provider.

There’s no obligation just for talking to us in the first instance, so if you’re thinking of changing dental waste contractor and you’re interested in learning more about Gaskells, fill in our online contact form today or give us a call on 0345 305 2614 or fill in our online contact form for a prompt response from a member of our team.
