Retail waste management raises recycling rates and cuts packaging waste

Gaskells’ retail waste management services help businesses in the retail sector to meet the challenges of retail waste disposal. This helps improve retail recycling rates in an industry responsible for large quantities of packaging waste and other materials.

Each year, retailers generate thousands of tonnes of recyclable business waste, including common packaging materials like paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and glass.

In 2015 the UK was sixth among the 28 EU member states in terms of the amount of packaging waste generated. Brits created nearly 180kg of waste materials per inhabitant, compared with an EU average of just over 160kg.

But the UK has relatively high recycling rates too. As much as 110kg per person is recycled each year in the UK, in line with the EU average.

A key contributor to this is the waste management retail operators put in place. A ‘reduce reuse recycle’ strategy helps to repurpose as much as possible of the retail waste materials they generate.

Choose a Container Type

Sizes range from 240 litre to 1100 litre containers with lockable lids available.

These are ideal for all types of business & commercial waste including general waste, cardboard, mixed recycling, food and glass.

Front End Loaders, or FELs, are the familiar kind of commercial lidded skips, suitable for large volumes of compactable waste, and especially for recyclable cardboard waste and other dry mixed recyclables.

Roll On-Roll Off, or Ro-Ro skips, are among the largest containers available for commercial use, suitable for the disposal of very large quantities of general waste and bulky materials like construction waste and scrap.

Crucial considerations for joined-up retail waste disposal

A good retail waste management strategy starts with reducing waste where possible. That might mean working with your suppliers to make sure you do not take delivery of unnecessary packaging materials.

There are all sorts of ways to reuse retail waste directly. You could arrange for local food banks to collect any usable food waste. You might also let customers use empty packaging boxes to carry their purchases home.

For the waste that cannot be reduced, removed or reused directly, this is where your retail recycling strategy comes into effect.

As with domestic recycling, you need to make sure you know what can and cannot be recycled. You should also have suitable containers for the different quantities and types of retail recycling waste you generate.

Choose the right retail waste disposal partner

It’s important to choose the right retail waste disposal partner. This helps you to feel confident that you are being as eco-friendly as possible. It also means you have the paperwork you need to prove where your waste is going.

Gaskells work with businesses of all sizes to offer more than just a basic retail waste management service. Our fully joined-up retail waste management strategy includes:

  • Retail waste collection service on a schedule that suits you.
  • Waste weighed at collection and full details provided of amount of waste removed.
  • Recycling bins for a variety of recyclable materials and general waste streams.
  • Ability to collect from retail sector premises across the North West and Wales.
  • Support to leave existing retail waste contracts and a fixed price promise.

This means that even if you have an existing long-term contract for retail waste disposal, Gaskells can quote a price. This fixed quote will still apply when you exit your contract and are ready for us to start collecting your waste.

What about general retail waste?

You can’t always control the types of waste materials your business generates. This is especially the case in terms of contaminated waste like cardboard boxes that have soaked up hazardous fluids.

A good waste management strategy recognises this and aims to manage waste without sending as much retail waste to landfill.

Gaskells collect general waste from retailers and other businesses. We can provide you with full documentation of how much has been collected on each scheduled date.

We also work with a hazardous waste collection partner. This allows us to remove quantities of certain substances like batteries, aerosols and paints from retail premises and other business customers.
