As we all know Brexit is having an impact on many businesses, but here’s one change you might not have thought of, with one of our customers in Lancashire.
FlowerVision is one of the top florist wholesalers in the north, which provides fresh flowers, plants, and sundries to numerous areas, from Preston, Chorley, Blackpool, Cheshire, Lancaster to Hull, Sheffield, Leeds and many more. Their purpose built flower warehouse in Chorley is also home to Europe’s biggest flower fridge, it’s a HUGE walk in one which, we can tell you, smells absolutely divine. We’ve worked with the team at FlowerVision for many years but since Brexit have completely overhauled our waste management services there, due to changes in how they dealt with their cardboard & plastic waste. Fresh flowers are driven over to FlowerVision from Holland every week by company founders Paul and Dirk, and pre-Brexit, all the cardboard would go back there to be recycled. Now, that’s changed, so the team decided to look at recycling the cardboard themselves and came to us for a solution.
Our Business Support Manager paid them a site visit, and recommended Gaskells G500V mill sized baler as the perfect solution. It compresses the waste into a fraction of its original size in seconds and creates bales of cardboard fully optimised for transport. Upon installation there, staff were given full training on how to use it, and received certificates of competence.
Two months in, we’ve been back to check how it’s all going, and the team’s happy to report complete satisfaction with the ease of use and efficiency. Over 10 Tonnes of cardboard have already been created, which we collect and take to our specialist cardboard recyclers.
In time, FlowerVision will also make a return on their waste, so will actually be making money from recycling their own cardboard, along with doing their bit for the environment and sustainability. We’d also like to give kudos to the team at FlowerVision Lancashire for the benefits they’ve brought to the Chorley area, with 38 local people now working there since the warehouse was opened in 2014. They’re an excellent team, committed to the area, and a special shoutout for what they did when lockdown hit last year. A warehouse full of beautiful fresh flowers, being told you have to close..so what did they do? The team spent the whole day delivering those flowers to care homes, NHS staff, and even parked up in the local Tesco carpark giving flowers to shoppers! An incredible gesture which left the whole of Chorley awash with FlowerVision Flowers.
